1846 and all that

1846 saw the opening of the Peoples College School and also the foundation of William Clarke's famed All-England Eleven. To commemorate the opening of the Brackenhurst Cricket Ground, Southwell on 27, 28, 29 August 1846 a 3-day match took place between The Gentlemen of Southwell and England. The match was played for the benefit of William Clarke. Late on Friday evening `Nottinghamshire determined to give up the contest considering that as there was no chance of winning the interest of the game was over'.
